Subject Please help. Seeking Clarification on Animal-Companion-type Mounts for PFS. Disagreeing with VC

To Michael Brock,

Hi, my name is Sean Shia and I'm a player/gm from Singapore's PFS group.

Sorry for troubling you, but there is a current disagreement with my VC on what list of mounts are available for the Bonded Mount, Divine Bond and Mount class abilities of the Nature Oracle, Paladin and Cavalier, respectively.

My VC, Richard, states that as the FAQ writes "another source grants access to additional creature choices.". The above classes can now select creatures like Axebeaks, Giant Chameleon and other more exotic mount choices, as Ultimate Equipment, Animal Archive, and the Bestiaries are sources that have opened up "access" for the above classes.

I maintain that my interpretation of "another source grants access", means a boon or an archetype that opens up "access" to more mount options for these classes.

Does the fact that the books above now have more mounts available for PFS, means that the above 3 classes can select from a wider range of mounts? Or is the list of mounts they have access to still limited to their respective class abilities? (meaning only horses, camels, pony, wolf, boar and dog mounts.)

Another equally important question is, what is defined as a source? Are Books sources? Or individual feats/classes/boons?

I would really appreciate clarification on this matter.

Richard is a great VC, and has gone out of his way to clarify rules and helping new GMs. This matter is simply one that has reach the end of any further discussion and now requires intervention from a higher authority.

The three classes are still limited to their respective class abilities.

To Sum it up.

Paladins can only take Mounts listed from page 63 of Core Rule Book.

Cavaliers can only take Mounts listed from page 33 of Advanced Player Guide.

Only Specific Chronicle Sheets or Boons that state that you are allowed to obtain said creature as Mounts are allowed as mounts.

Druids on the other hand should refer to Bestiary 1,2 & 3 in additional resources in addition to what is listed for them in Core Rule Book in regards to Animal Companions.

Exceptions to these rules are Prestige classes like Mammoth Rider or the Cavaliers Archetype Beast Rider

Take note that Animal Companions and Mounts are 2 different class features although for sake of simplicity they progressed as per animal companions reflected in their respective class features.

The Mammoth Rider or the Cavaliers Archetype Beast Rider are examples of "another legal source" as stated in the PFS FAQ.

The books are all sources/resources, but having a book does not mean all options in the books are legal or accessible to use.

For example, having the Advance Race Guide, does not means you have legal access to make Goblins, Kitsune, Najaji or Sylph characters. In this case, a boon is required to access these races and make them legal to use.

Are you suggesting that Mammoth Rider is legal for PFS play but the PC needs some other boon or some such resource to access the mammoth?

Steed (Ex)

A mammoth rider can choose from among the following animal companions to serve as her loyal steed:

Arsinoitherium, aurochs, baluchitherium, camel, cat (big), elk, horse, mastodon (elephant), megaloceros, rhinoceros, triceratops, wolf, or woolly mammoth (use stats for a mastodon).

A GM might expand this list to include other possible steeds. This steed functions as a druid's animal companion, replacing any animal companion or mount gained from another class. The mammoth rider's class levels stack with other classes that grant an animal companion to determine her effective druid level.

Gigantic Steed (Ex)

A mammoth rider's steed increases to Huge size. The creature receives a –1 penalty on attack rolls and to AC, and a –2 penalty to Dexterity (to a minimum of 1); its base damage increases by one size category; and its reach increases to 10 feet. It also gains a +2 size bonus to its Strength and Constitution. At 3rd level and every two levels thereafter, the Strength bonus increases by an additional +2; the bonus to Constitution increases by an additional +2 at 5th and again at 9th level.

Huh???

I am just restating your 1st post in my post.

A Mammoth Rider's Steed (Ex) gives the character access to the listed mounts. Therefore, a Mammoth rider can pick a mammoth as a steed.

And No, I am not suggesting the Mammoth Rider cannot access the mammoth. The Mammoth Rider is just an example of a legal source that can give a character access to more mount options.
