Just looked at it and realised it was very similar to the 3rd Ed D&D miniatures where they have point buy systems which allows you to buy your characters for your party and these characters have their own stat cards as well. Anybody know what I was talking about?

Yep, I agree - but usable with rules we're more familiar with.
What I particularly thought would be fun is our iconic group characters can also be included in the mix once they're retired - so you shuffle the deck and draw: GLOIN, the dwarf archer!
