I noticed how some people are using existing images in an attempt to describe how their characters appear.
After some short searching, I found a pretty neat character portrait generator! It's called 'HeroMachine'. It's made in Flash, so you'd need a desktop/laptop in order to use it. Best of all, it's free!

You can try using HeroMachine 2.5 or HeroMachine 3.
You will probably have take some time to experiment and play around with it, but you'll be pretty much rewarded once you get the hang of it!
