Gavis
Human Thug for Hire
Killed by: PETER WITH LONGSPEAR
11 Mar
Arrived in Scaredale and got our pay for the caravan guard stint. The paymaster tried to swindle Brunus out of two gold. Good thing I was there to straighten things out. Told Brunus to get a journal for himself, to put things down so there’s no forgetting what he’s owed in payment.
Now we just wait for the Thayans to get here tomorrow. One job after another. “Good planning brings good earnings”, I always say.
12 Mar
Met the Thayans at the docks and quickly brought them out of town. Scardale town was relatively dodgy, but better not push our luck. There were three of them plus their slave.
Put them up in the caverns under Featherfall. Hidden away from prying eyes and close to where they needed to go.
13 Mar
Brought their leader, Savek, to have a look over at where they wanted to conduct their ritual. Chola… some wizard’s tower. Seemed satisfied enough, then went to prepare stuff with the other Thayans for their ritual tomorrow.
Once this is over, I can get nice puppet I saw in Scardale. Tessa would love it. Heck, I might get two, Tessa’s going to be a big sister soon.
15 Mar
I will never take on a job involving magic ever again. I swear! Something happened during the ritual last night. Two of the Thayans and their slave ended up dead, with Brunus badly hurt as some… thing… came out of the ground covered in snow and dirt. Crushed the Thayans and hit Brunus, flinging him the length of a dining hall!
We came back to the cavern hideout and tried to treat Brunus. Savek even used a wand to patch him up, but it wasn’t enough. Puked blood in the night and died this morning. More gold for me.
Went to check if the coast was clear for Savek to get back to Scardale and back to Thay, and heard that there were new folk in town. Strangely garbed outsiders that appeared by the wizard’s tower in a horseless cart.
Told Savek about it, and he seemed very interested. Wanted to study these visitors now.
I hope he learns something. Don’t want to not get paid because he went home empty handed.
16 Mar
So the plan is Savek would use his owl pet to spy on them while I was supposed to see if they could put up a fight.
They spend most of their time apart. Good. Easy pickings if we have to off them. Only one might be an issue though. The one spending the whole day at the carpenter’s, trying to make some sort of bow. Seen that look before, when he’s concentrating, like a fighter sizing up an opponent.
17 Mar
A couple of them were in the caverns. Took Brunus’ stuff too. Damn. Was hoping to sell his stuff when this whole thing is over. This is bad. If they come back again, they might come across our hideout.
Discussed this with Savek. His plan is to get one of their magic items, and kidnap one of them to teach him how it worked.
18 Mar
Good thing Savek said to speed things up. They came and took Brunus away this morning. Last thing we need is for nosey people coming exploring. We shifted our hideout but it would probably buy us only a day or two.
Spoke to one of the outsiders just now. Saw one of their magic items. We’d take it tonight while they slept, and if we could, kidnap one of them while we’re at it.

Human Ambitious Red Wizard of Thay
Killed by: JASLYN WITH SICKLE
12 Marpenoth 1369
The mercenaries hired were efficient enough. They were already waiting for us at the docks when our vessel landed in the dead of night in Scardale.
Quickly, we made our way to a location that they said was suitable for a hideout. A series of underground caverns under a waterfall.
If it wasn’t for the prestige that would soon be ours, no Red Wizard would deign to put up with such “accommodations”. I reminded my colleagues as such, to stay their tongues and steel their focus for the task soon to come.
13 Marpenoth 1369
The smarter brute, Gavis, I think his name was, walked me from our hideout to Cholandrothipe's Tower. Indeed, the hideout was well chosen, it was hidden from general traffic and not too far from the Tower.
And so, we began our preparations, once again going through the ritual, making sure everyone knew their part and what to do at the appropriate time.
The effects of the sleeping drug should wear off sometime tomorrow at sunrise, so there was enough time to get our wild mage slave ready for the ritual.
Yes, other Red Wizards have tried before to unlock the secrets of Cholandrothipe’s Tower after his death, but none thought to include a component of wild magic. True, it was a blight upon the Art, but one should be careful not to overlook it as a means to an end.
By the end of the Tenday, we shall return to Thay with prestige and the favour of the Zulkirs!
14 Marpenoth 1369
Amidst the chaos and exhaustion of today, I must document my thoughts down lest I forget.
The ritual did not go as planned. Based on our estimates and calculations, the worst case scenario was that our slave would perish as the tower’s defences performed their function. Instead, something came out from the ground beyond the tower compound. No, “erupted” would be more accurate. Like a tongue of earth and snow bursting from below, crushing Dural, Lamath and our slave, while knocking the other brute off his feet.
In that instant, I noted an intense aura of conjuration magic before my survival instincts took over and called to Gavis to return to our hideout.
Back here, we studied the dumber brute, Brunus. He lost consciousness after making it back here. We examined him, found him to have some open gashes, but he seemed to be very badly bruised and unable to use some of his limbs. Reminds me of when we levitated some of our slaves and dispelled just for fun. His injuries seem consistent with those sustained from a large impact.
Gavis kept asking me to heal him. Did he take leave of his senses? I am a wizard, not a cleric. Nevertheless, to calm the fool down, I made a show of casting using one of my wands. He seemed satisfied.
I stationed Snow by the entrance of the caverns to keep watch, just in case we were somehow observed and followed.
Now, I must rest and recover my strength.
15 Marpenoth 1369
Needless to say, Brunus perished during the night. I sent Gavis out to see if last night’s incident had drawn unnecessary attention which would impede my return to Scardale and Thay. I still have all of my notes, so the ritual can be performed again, perhaps even made better after having some time to study last night’s mishap. Of course, to do so I would need to be back in Thay and not incarcerated by some farmland peasants.
Gavis has brought back fascinating news. It would seem that last night’s incident heralded the arrival of some travellers. Based on what he said, they seem to be from somewhere far away, beyond Faerun, maybe even beyond the prime material plane.
I have instructed him to study them. The failure of the ritual to disable the tower defences meant that I did not uncover any of Cholandrothipe’s secrets, and so he does not get paid. However, if there is something to learn from these travellers, and the knowledge does add to my power, he will get paid the original agreed upon sum.
16 Marpenoth 1369
I suggested a two pronged approach. Snow would observe them from on the skies and while they slept. Gavis would observe to see if they would be a threat.
Meanwhile, I have shifted Brunus’ corpse to another passage. He will start to decay soon enough. Can’t have these tunnels filled with stench.
17 Marpenoth 1369
They do have a strange manner of dressing and speaking. Two of them came into the caverns today and came across the corpse. This will not bode well. If they spoke of the corpse to the townsfolk, there would be more people down here.
Yet, Tymora did smile upon me, for when they were fussing over the corpse, I was able to observe them use a strange instrument. A small palm sized piece of slate, it produced a flash of light that reminded me of lightning, yet nothing happened to the corpse. I wonder what its function was, and what they were doing with it.
Yes, that shall be my object of study. What strange magic did it possess? I will devise a plan to obtain it for study and if I have to, force one of them to reveal the secrets of their magic. I will NOT go back empty handed!
18 Marpenoth 1369
As expected, they came for the corpse. We quickly shifted our hideout to another cavern. It would buy us a few more days at most, if more people decided to come exploring. It was not much, but it would be enough for what we needed to do.
Tymora smiled on me twice! One of the travellers blatantly told Gavis that that piece of slate was indeed magical.
We’d make our move tonight then. Based on Gavis’ intelligence, I sent Snow to drug the dinner of the one who would present the strongest threat. He’d sleep for two day’s straight. Even if we needed to wait until tomorrow, there was still enough time to get him on the boat to Thay.
