The Pathfinders reached Alkenstar to attend a meeting with a minister of the city, Eliza Baratella, leader of the Guild of Brass. A guild which builds Brass Guardians, a variant of clockwork soldiers. Fearing that someone within the government wishes her ill, she sought the help of a neutral third party, and what better than the famous league of international explorers known as the Pathfinder Society? One led by Venture-Captain Theodore "Real Man" Rohan, no less.
A long but uneventful journey takes the party of the Venture-Captain Theodore, himself, the Guntank Anfernal, Order of the Black Powder, the paladin of Sarenrae Grijm, the summoner Than'nolic & the exotic Minkaian Misuto. All of them, the highest ranking of the Society. Seekers, agents sent to solve mysteries far and wide.
They journeyed overland, as teleportation magic into Alkenstar is impossible. The east side of the city is magic dead, while the west is subjected to magical chaos due to the leftover magical duels which happened 4 millenium ago, between the magical might of Geb & Nex.
"I thank you for coming so quickly." Eliza started, "We have brass guardians going haywire & rampaging through the city & all originates from the western side of the city. My agent, Arvanor has followed one to the Karggat Mines 50 miles out and after giving me the report, he went back there & was not heard from again. That was 2 months ago. My airship will take you there & hopefully, you can find something which might stop this brass guardians from going on a rampage again."
With a full-fledged primal storm less than a mile away, the airship dropped the guys at the Karggat Mine & scooted away as fast as they can. Venturing into the mines, they found out in the priest quarters, a record of how the miners died, their names, time of death, location & cause of death. Except for the following 3: Dyjas, Issig & Emori, whose death locations are all described as "Abandoned eastern mining tunnel, upper level" & whose dates of death have been left blank. Anfernal quickly comes to the conclusion that they are dead as the initials of the miners added together are DIE. Theodore quickly pocketed a small golden icon of a god. The craftsmanship of the icon is unrivaled, its numerous moving parts are etched with runes intricate enough to impress even the most critical tinkerer.
Than'nolic summoned a few dire bats as scouts and tasked them to return to his side as soon as they encounter any living creatures. A couple promptly returned within 4 minutes & moving onwards, the party ascended a set of stairs to the miners' quarters. Granted the mine was abandoned for at least 4 years already, but what remains of their old quarters. They saw what looks like giant clawed feet marks on the stone stairs & preparing themselves, they entered the first room gingerly. Empty. The second saw a large horrible looking creature, with 4 vicious claws & a head which has been split open vertically confronting them. Than'nolic created a pit beneath it, but it dodged into melee with the party. Thanks for the free movement, Than'nolic! In which it proceeded to engage the party. Concentrated assault on Grijm resulted in him being down for the 1st time & due to Than'nolic being unfamiliar with the primal magic, resulted in a harm spell which decimated the whole party, but luckily they were just mobbing up the few remaining creatures. Here, Misuto saw a full charged Necklace of Fireballs VII & wanted to pass it around as she is afraid that she will fail her Reflex save vs fire & the resultant 48d6 will MOST definitely kill her.
While healing up from the aftermath of the CL 12 harm spell, Theodore saw a weird looking golem with a brain & a pair of eyes peeking at him. As soon as it saw him, it turn & fled. The bralanis that Than'nolic created gave chase & due to their cheese fly movement of 100' managed to catch up to see the golem trying to squeeze in between the walls. "Arvanor, halt!" & cries of "Don't move, or I will shoot!" rang through the chamber. The golem doesn't care & was promptly beaten down. Wondering what the golem was doing trying to squeeze in through tight quarters, Theodore's keen perception found a catch which revealed a secret door.
Entering through the door, they found a lab whose sole occupant is a mutated ratling alchemist called Habblegash. The party agreed to help it rid of the gug threat & he can never be happier. So happy in fact, that he is not ostracized by them that he gave the party 4 potions of eruptive pustules & 4 elixirs of ice breath (like fire breath but produces cold instead.) With the party's exceedingly high charisma, 2 casters of Cha 28, 1 guntank of 22 Cha & a paladin's Cha of 18, they even managed to convince Habblegash to join them. The drug addicted Habblegash is willing to join them & guide them through the mines, even if it puts himself in harm's way. Of course, also telling them where he laid his poisoned spike pit traps so that they won't fall foul of his own traps. Also, that there are 2 secret caches where he stored his PHAT LEWT to assist the party. Also, he gave them a thick iron key. What does it do? He have no idea but am sure the PCs will find some use for it.
Some info from Habblegash:
Small camp of gugs have seized the decline tunnel, which will enable a mine cart to descend into the next level. A two-headed freak have also taken domain in the lower tunnels. The area also houses the ettin's mutated ogre underlings & other bestial monsters native to the Western Ravage. The gang has reactivated the mining equipment in the lower mines (likely with the help of a much smarter individual) & they have begun mining a strange crystalline mineral that Habblegash has yet to identify. It's long term goals? Habblegash don't know but he's sure it has something to do with the abandoned dwarven factory outside the northern mine's entrance shaft.
