In Shades of Ice I:
The party was tasked to get to Trollheim to look for Rognvald Skagni, a scholar and an ally to the Pathfinder Society, to pass him a chest full of documents so that he can complete his report to the Society regarding the areas around the north, mainly the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, Irrisen and the Realm of the Mammoth Lords.
On arrival, after getting lost for a short while due to poorly drawn maps and instructions, the group managed to get to Rognvald's house but it was burnt down and they were ambushed by a few men with no sign of Rognvald Skagni. On the walls of the burnt-out ruin, they saw four feet tall letters, inked in blood, reading "Pathfinders Go Home".
After a few attempts to find out where the culprits are hiding, they found out that Runa White, a Shadow Lodge agent was manipulating a barbarian chief of a destroyed tribe into stirring trouble with the Pathfinder Society. The barbarian was turned over to the authorities, but not before Runa White was throttled by the barbarian for her manipulative schemes.
It was learnt that the scholar was sent to Whitethrone, capital city of Irrisen, home to Queen Elvanna, daughter of Baba Yaga to be sold as a slave and that the Shadow Lodge headquarters was located beneath an abandoned brewery.
In Shades of Ice II:
Enroute to Whitethrone, the Pathfinders signed on to a mixed caravan of merchants and hunters on a diplomatic mission to Irrisen and disguised themselves as warriors and guards. With this ruse, they managed to pass the notoriously well guarded Irrisen border, with its bizarre chicken-legged huts, and were just outside the city of Irrisen when two large bands of ice trolls led by Irrisen soldiers beset the caravan. The group fled unharmed while the massive trolls ruthlessly slaughtered the entire caravan, and as the present scenario begins, they find themselves outside the city of Whitethrone looking for a way in.
After gaining entry into the city, the Pathfinders raided the Shadow Lodge headquarters and it is there that Skagni divulged that he knew that there is a Shadow Lodge mission to the Keep of the Huskarl King and he urges the group to go after them and stop them. Should the powerful weapon be recovered, it could cause serious troule for the Pathfinder Society and among the nations of the north. Though Skagni is not aware of what the weapon is, he has read of its power in ancient verbal tales passed down in the northern tribes of the Realm of the Mammoth Lords and know that it is something to be feared.
Thorough search of the underground lodge also revealed several journals and letters detailing Caggrigar's journey into the Worldwound with an elite team of Shadow Lodge agents, that the lodge left Vermund in charge after Melkorka Skur took the remaining reliable agents and set out for the Keep of the Huskarl King; and a single, unfinished letter from Caggrigar to someone named “the Spider” in Almas that talks about the “great power” contained within the keep that the Shadow Lodge could “harness and train” to take down the Grand Lodge in Absalom once and for all.
The end of the unfinished letter mentions the failure of “our illustrious leader” and hints at support should the Spider wish to usurp control of the lodge entirely.
To be continued......
