Living in the Five Mountains Kingdom for most of his life, Grunyar was captured by a tribe of Derro and cruelly experimented on, for in the Derro's insanity, they tried to make Grunyar one of them which alchemically modified him to possess the eyes and complexion of a Derro. Eventually, he was brought to the Derro's leader, a lich known as Blaise, an apprentice of an ancient lich known as Tar-Baphon. Greatly amused by Grunyar's faith in Pharasma and his helplessness in the face of such an abomination, Blaise kept Grunyar as an amusing pet, to be tortured. Through a stroke of luck, some say that such possibilites only happen once in a million, Grunyar managed to wrest himself away from the Derros and crawled upwards from the Darklands, back towards the Five Mountains Kingdom. He was captured and tortured for fifteen long years... And due to his devotion to Pharasma, he managed to keep hanging on to his sanity though he have clammed up and spoke to no one of his time in Blaise's hands. He never did quite recover until the fateful day that Professor Lorrimor was invited to the Kingdom for a lecture and having never encountered a lich before, he spent three months in the Kingdom, trying to coax Grunyar out of his shell and trying to study the horrors and depravities that he had suffered. Three months passed in the blink of an eye and Grunyar's continous recount of his experience eventually allowed him to come to terms with his tortures. Throwing himself further into the studies of Pharasma, he promised to rid the world of the unholy abominations known as the undead, through might and faith and it was this time when he stepped out of the Five Mountains Kingdom that he received the news that Professor Lorrimor has passed from this world, to Pharasma's Graveyard, to be judged.

The Gravedigger’s Daughter It was a dark and stormy night but even the cacophony of rain beating against the windows and the claps of thunder could not drown out the babe-like wailing outside Darius’ home. “Go away!” howled the gravedigger from beneath his blanket, afraid that the wailing was some foul spirit that was trying to bait him out of the safety of his own home. Heartbeats passed, and his conscience could not ignore the crying anymore. He got up, adorned himself with all manner of religious trinkets for protection, and opened the door. A flash of lightning cast the shadows of gravestones along the wet ground, and all seemed to point toward a little bundle of cloth at his feet, which he quickly brought into his home, away from the wind and rain. The next few days would see him visiting various orphanages in the area, looking for someone to take the poor child in, for a graveyard was no place to raise a child. Alas, no one would take in something found in the graveyard, not to mention a sickly pale child with eyes of mismatched colours. The next few years would see Darius bringing up young Anna to the best of his limited abilities, for there was only so much a gravedigger could teach her. She learnt extraordinarily quickly, much to his delight. Unfortunately, his joy was short lived, for he soon noticed that she would spend an excessive amount of time with the cadavers, and sometimes noticed young men leaving the graveyard in the dead of night, just before his dear Anna returned home. He could not bring himself to confront her, his one and only daughter, whom he saw as a gift from the gods, for no woman would deign to marry a gravedigger. Thankfully, his friend, Professor Lorrimor, came to visit one day, and he shared his worries with his learned companion. Lorrimor then explained to Darius the reason for his daughter’s strange behavior and appearance – she was a changeling, the offspring of witch and mortal, and that her heritage would influence her behavior to a certain extent. Upon Darius’ plea to help Anna diminish whatever potentially evil inclinations that her ancestry might influence her to do, the good professor brought Anna with him on his travels. Taking her under his wing as he conducted his research proved to be a great distraction from her fixation with corpses and young men, while expanding her realm of understanding at the same time. As time went by, the inevitable came to be, and she received her calling, the strange hunger that comes upon changelings, driving them to seek out their true origins. Knowing that only Anna herself could choose whether or not to ignore this call, Lorrimor bade farewell to Darius’ charge, hoping that with all that he taught her, Anna would have learnt and seen enough, to know what to do, when the time came.
